Most popular RPGs of 2017

There were some exciting game releases over the course of 2016, but as far as RPGs were concerned, the year will not go down in history as any kind of game changer. However, this was to a large extent because so many developers decided to keep their powder dry. The good news is that when one unveils something, others are quick to follow, and this appears to be the case for 2017.

Suddenly, there is a whole heap to choose from, and it is something of a challenge to know where to start. As well as the classic RPGs, the increased popularity and broader marketing of online casino games over the past year or so has seen a real surge in the RPG slots you can play. As far as we are concerned, playing a great RPG and having the opportunity to win some real money at the same time sounds like a win / win, so let’s first look at that subgenre, and check out some of the games where you can change characters on your favorite video slots. After that, we will take a glance at some of the classic RPGs that are new or significantly updated for 2017.

RPG slots

Adding an RPG element to a traditional slot machine has proved to be enormously popular. As we mentioned, the online casino aspect of gaming is a real area of growth, and many of those who have, perhaps, always been tempted by the idea of entering a casino, but been nervous about doing so, have found it a great way into this popular pastime. Meanwhile, the RPG has been a staple of gaming from the earliest dawn of computers.Drawing the two worlds together makes a lot of sense, and provides a richer experience for participants, whichever side they are approaching from. So, which are the top RPG slots to look out for?

Probably the best of 2017 is NetEnt’s Warlords: Crystals of Power. OK, it was actually released in November 2016, but that is close enough.  The trailer alone created one of the biggest buzzes of the year when it went viral at the very end of last year, and the game lives up to the hype. The 3D graphics are awesome, and the backstory, involving a three-way battle to finally force an end to a war that has been raging for years is engaging. The slot aspect does not disappoint, with five reels and three rows, not to mention generous free spin availability.

Another intriguing offering is Alchymedes that was released by Yggdrasil earlier in the year. The game is optimized for mobiles, and centers around a mysterious laboratory where participants can choose between greater multipliers and larger spreading patterns. These come together to create a mix of bonuses. At heart, the game is a 30-payline video slot that has five reels. It pays in both directions and features thousands of different possible patterns, to guarantee you will not become bored. There is also a bonus feature, which can be triggered at the start of each level and offers a variety of rewards.

Classic RPG offerings

How about the more traditional RPGs? There has also been an explosion of these arriving on the scene in 2017, with more due in the coming weeks.

Among the most eagerly anticipated is South Park: The Fractured but Whole. Debate has been raging about whether this is going to be the RPG that everyone has been awaiting all year, or a crude concept with a funny name but little substance behind the one joke. According to those who have had a sneak peek, the game plays in much the same way as its predecessor, The Stick of Truth, but with more advanced mechanics and the fantasy backstory replaced by one involving superheroes. Of course, the gameplay is jammed full of all the innuendo and bodily function-related jokes that you would expect from Cartman, Kyle and the rest. However, the initial indications are that there is enough to appeal to die hard RPG fans too – as long as they have a sense of humor.

If you like your RPGs without fart jokes, then perhaps you are more eagerly awaiting Persona 5. The wait has been long – it has been 10 years since Persona 4 took the world by storm. As you might expect, Persona 5 takes the whole genre to new levels. In many respects, it could not be more different from South Park. This is a serious game for serious RPG enthusiasts, and you need to dedicate time and effort to really get into it. But do so, and the rewards are significant. There are two sides to the game. In the first, you are an everyday kid, just trying to make sense of being a small fish in the huge pond that is modern day Tokyo. This part is complex enough, and the gameplay is intentionally disorienting as you get into a routine and find your way around. Get your head around that, however, and you have the second part to contend with, as you enter the metaverse, a dream-like world full of demonic manifestations of your teenage desires and those of your allies and enemies.

Finally, we cannot fail to mention the sequel to one of the most popular RPGs of the past five years. Divinity: Original Sin 2 does everything the original did, only with a better story, more interesting characters and improved gameplay. As before, there is freedom to complete the journey of the game in the way that you choose, within certain defined boundaries. This creates a rich and immersive gaming experience, where the mission of the overall party takes precedence over that of the individual.

Exploring the world of RPG

These are just a few of the most exciting traditional and slot related RPG offerings. With some already available and others due for release in the coming weeks, there is no doubt that this will be a year to remember. Which game will get your vote for the best of 2017?
