World of Warcraft (WoW), released by Blizzard Entertainment in 2004, is arguably the most renowned Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG).
The game takes up its story in the Warcraft Universe, precisely, in Azeroth.
The game has seen several expansion packs being added throughout the years.
It has made the Guiness Book of World Records for having the largest number of subscribers. Until 2014, 100 million accounts were announced to have been created throughout its lifespan.
The game begins with the player choosing a character avatar. The game can be played in first or third-person point of view. Missions include exploring sites, battle against monsters, completing quests, as well as interacting with other player-controlled characters and NPCs (non-playable characters).
When entering a game, the player must choose one of four servers known as realms. Each one of these realms defines the type of gameplay and interactivity in the world in distinct ways. Staying true to the original storyline, players must choose to side with the Alliance or the Horde. Players can communicate using conversation, mail, group chat, and join guilds with other party members. However, communication between players of opposing parties is limited to rudimentary functions only. The Horde includes orcs and trolls to choose from, whereas the Alliance has humans and dwarves. The class of the character must also be chosen. The list includes mages, warriors, and priests.
As players develop their character, new talents and skills are added, and players must define in further detail the abilities of the character. Two primary professions can be chosen from a list, and all secondary skills can be learnt. Players can gain access to the guild, allowing access to the chat channel and other features.
Most quests can be accessed through contact with NPCs, and rewards include experience points, items and in-game money, also allowing for new access of skills and abilities. Completing one quest unlocks the next. The goal of a quest can be anything from killing creatures, finding resources, retrieving or interacting with object, speaking to NPCs, visiting locations, or transporting an item. The story is told by means of these quests. Some quests can be tackled by a single player whilst others encourage teaming up with other players. If a character dies, s/he can be resurrected in one of many ways. Items equipped by the player can degrade when resurrected or over time.
